Two Women, Two Toddlers and a Drama Queen

The countdown has started! In just 14 days, we begin F. Road Trip 09--The Long Journey East. I know you think I'm about to warn you of my absence during that time, but ah...no... au contrair, my dear reader. As the true blogger that I am, I could not pass up this opportunity for (what I am sure will be) a rich source of blogging material. I intend to bring you regular updates from every Starbucks we stop in along the way. Or wherever I can find the neccessary wifi.

And to make it even better, I intend to vlog! Yes, that's right! Herb of Grace, the blog, is going cutting-edge-21st-century on you! I will be live vlogging our journey across this great country.

Mom, I hear you groaning about your dial-up and how you won't be able to watch the vids and all, but take heart. I will do my best to include some written accounts as well, for the less techie among us.

First, to pique your interest, I want to share with you our itinerary!

Photobucket

Each of those little blue flaggies is an overnight stop, and that blank bit is 'cause we don't know where we'll stop along in there, 'cause it's West Virginia, for pete's sake.

Now, to make it even more fun for y'all and for us, won't you chime in? What should we see and do along the way? Have you been to any of these places? Do you have any favorites spots along our route? What do you want us to check out for ya? What do you want to hear about on the Vacation Vlog? Got any good tips for traveling with kids? (besides the Benadryl thing, Laurie...)

And does anyone want to help me design a cool header to display during our road trip vlogging days? Pretty please? I'll put in a good word for you and you can think of it as free advertising! You can email me...

Ah-hem. I maintain that the Benadryl was given to MATT by HIS PARENTS! (actually I hear that it can have the reverse effect when given to young children!)

I will say though, if it were a sure thing... I definitely would not be above giving it to my kids! (barring dangerous age limitations!) I think any mother that wouldn't is probably lying, and definitely hasn't ever driven across the entire country.

Wow, that's a loooonnng drive. We drove from Vancouver to Washington state and that was already too long for moi. Every few minutes, my 4yo would ask, "Are we there yet? What's taking SO long?!"

If you won't mind driving a bit up from Seattle, you can go to the Seattle Premium Outlets. That's the only reason why we made the drive in the first place.

Well...I hear that you have relatives in Vancouver that would love to see you before you head east!!!

That is going to be an adventure for sure. Since I don't get around too much, I look forward to living vicariously through your trip :)

Seattle is my hometown! I love it there and am going at the end of this week. While Pike Street Market and the very first Starbucks do get a lot of draw, go to Dahlia lounge and try the doughnuts. INCREDIBLE.

And Pike Street Brewery is one of my fave places to eat. And go Rocky Mountain chocolate and get one of their crazy caramel apples. YUM.

Have a wonderful and safe trip.

That is one seriously LONG drive!! Maybe I'll get my boys to check your blog regularly and they can learn a little American geography 'en route' - would that be OK with you? Looks amazing - I don't envy - we don't even do the length of the UK, but all the same I'm sure you will see so much and live SOOO much fun! Travelling Mercies to you all.

I still think you guys are nuts for doing it.:) And dittos to Laurie: my Mom did the Benadryl thing for even shorter trips, and always advises friends to try it. Safely, of course. I'd try it on the kids before the trip to make sure it doesn't have the opposite effect.
Mount Rushmore is way cool, but try to shoot for a clear day. I saw it on a really cloudy one, and we had to wait for the clouds to drift off before catching a glimpse.

That's an incredibly long trip. But what an adventure, too! While I don't have any suggestions just yet, I have to say you'll be passing very near me. Woohoo! So I may email you a few suggestions. THAT BEING SAID...if you do a lot of touristy stuff, you're long trip will grow exponentially longer. LOL!

Jonathan tells me Mt Rushmore is overrated.

I already told Susi the Chicago hotel was great location, IMO, thinking of 3 travel-weary children in a big city with strollers and only 2 parents.

Anyway, I think it'll be a great trip, but you will value your rest as you reach each destination, just wanting to see one place each city. You are smart to not try to take it as fast as possible. The kids would be miserable. If it's an adventure, with something fun awaiting each time, it will be better.

I don't envy you though. I drove with Katrina, Shiona, and Karen the 8 hrs from NC to GA. Katrina was so DONE with the drive about 2 hours into it. Halfway there, she wanted to turn back. And we made it in 12 hours, because of hour-long McDonalds playing, rest-stop running around, etc.

Your children may not be as restless as that. In fact, I've been praying for the exact opposite. Plus, I know if K had her cousins in there, she'd have loved it much more. Your kids will too!

We went to Wall Drug in SD. If you go out the same interstate we did, which, really, how many interstates ARE there in SD, but trust me, you will NOT miss it. It was worth a stop to let Savannah run around and I got an apron there that I wear all the time. : )

Ah, you should visit more of Iowa! But if you're traveling through South Dakota, if it's on your way, look up the Corn Palace, Wall Drug, and I ESPECIALLY hope you get to see the Badlands - so beautiful. I hope you have fun and don't go insane!!!
